What possible piece of music could be uplifting given the momentous goings on in lower Manhattan and the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president? Someone suggested Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” tongue firmly in cheek. Thank you, but no. The outcome of the trial won’t heal this country, no matter the decision. We face a weeks-long ordeal with witnesses detailing things most of us would rather not know about Donald Trump. So I thought this Sunday we all needed a reason to smile that would also offer hope and encouragement … and might get you on your feet. What better than Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”  From those first iconic piano chords, the disco anthem fills you with optimism. The Grammy-winning, number-one hit was released almost half a century ago and holds up beautifully. Gaynor sings of a journey from recovery to strength following a devastating breakup. She convinces us that if she can survive, so can we. “That song, for me, is the core of my purpose, which is to bring hope, encouragement, inspiration and empowerment to people, especially women,” Gaynor told the Associated Press.  Amen, Ms. Gaynor.
