Over the last year, we’ve made some incredible progress — as a team and as a movement — and Alexandria took a look back to celebrate some of those victories with an end-of-year video recap.
This video has become a bit of an annual tradition here at Team AOC.
So — for the third year in a row — let’s count off 22 wins from 2022!
We’re proud to share Team AOC’s 22 highlights in 2022. As this year comes to a close, we have a lot to celebrate - thanks to your support and the tireless work of our organizers on the ground in NY-14.
#1 - This year, Alexandria introduced 33 pieces of legislation: 17 passed the House and 8 of Alexandria’s amendments and bills were signed into law. Among these 8 new laws, Alexandria is especially proud of a new law that will offer support to developing nations seeking debt relief.
#2 - Because of Alexandria’s work on the Oversight Committee, this year the New York Attorney General filed a $250 million civil lawsuit against the Trump Organization.
#3 - Our 4-year efforts on the Green New Deal helped push Congress this year to make the largest ever investment in fighting climate change – $369 billion! – with the Inflation Reduction Act. This funding is expected to create 9 million new jobs in renewable energy and lower annual energy bills by an average of $1,000/year.
#4 - Speaking of the GND, we launched our first Green New Deal Projects! Working with other House Members, we secured $100 million dollars for more than sixty projects, stretching from Hawaii to Vermont. (In NY-14, Alexandria secured funding for a GND program at SUNY Maritime that trained nearly 300 students for good paying, union jobs in wind energy).
#5 - Alexandria worked with Rep. Grace Meng to secure $120 million for water infrastructure in Queens. This long overdue investment will address the sewage failures that led to deadly flash floods during Hurricane Ida.
#6 - Alexandria secured $7 million for 10 major community projects around The Bronx and Queens, including a new labor unit and delivery unit to improve care for mothers and babies at Elmhurst Hospital, a public hospital in Queens.
#7 - Alexandria secured $2 million to establish the first multi-service community center serving South Asian & Indo-Caribbean communities in NYC. Organized by Chhaya CDC, this new space in Jackson Heights will provide housing assistance, immigration help, and many more much-needed services.
#8 - Alexandria invested in local community violence reduction programs, including a $400,000 grant to Jacobi’s Stand Up to Violence Program - which has a proven record of reducing recurrence of violence among participants by 50 percent.
#9 - We showed up for our community. We hosted or participated in 150 community outreach events, including 9 town halls, distributed over 1,000 backpacks, and organized a summer literacy program in Queens.
#10 - Alexandria’s constituent services team helped NY-14 residents get back over $1.9 million that they were owed from federal agencies. In total, they opened over 1,800 cases, and met with over 800 walk-ins.
#11 - Alexandria assisted community organizations with letters of support and technical grant applications, and helped deliver federal funding through the Clean School Bus Program for a new fleet of electric school buses in NYC!
#12 - After years of work with our NYC taxi drivers, we won the fight to bail out taxi drivers who fell victim to predatory medallion loans with $315 million in debt relief.
#13 - Team AOC took our Homework Helpers volunteer tutoring program statewide with a chapter at the University of Buffalo, and provided 3,800 sessions in 2022!
#14 - With your support, Alexandria and Team AOC fundraised $6.3 million for charity and mutual aid, and $830K for grassroots organizations. That includes over $400K for abortion rights groups working in Texas, Kansas, and other highly restrictive states.
#15 - Our Courage to Change PAC helped to elect 35 new progressive officials.
#16 - We traveled to four states and raised $1.3 million for progressive candidates and organizations, resulting in the best midterm election for Democrats in 60 years!
#17 - Team AOC took on disinformation in the Spanish-language community. In addition to deep canvassing in Spanish-language programs, we launched Wasapea con AOC – becoming one of the first campaigns in the country to have an organized presence on Whatsapp.
#18 - After a wild year of NY redistricting, Alexandria won her own reelection in NY-14 with 70% of the vote and ran one of the most comprehensive field programs in NYC.
#19 - In the House, alongside Rep. Nydia Velazquez and others, Alexandria helped lead negotiations and passage of the Puerto Rico Status Act, which acknowledges the U.S. as a colonizing force for the first time in history and outlines a process for Boricuas to determine their own future.
#20 - Alexandria helped to pass the first major gun reform in 30 years. This new law will close dangerous loopholes, increase background checks, and crack down on interstate gun trafficking.
#21 - We also helped cap insulin at $35 per month for those on Medicare, starting next month. And we gave Medicare the power to negotiate the cost of other select prescription drugs.
#22 - Finally, we made real progress in taxing the rich, with a new 15% minimum tax rate on the largest corporations.
And that isn’t even all of it!
Most importantly: the only reason Alexandria and Team AOC are able to do this work is because of you.
Thanks to your involvement, millions of people have been positively impacted by phone banking, small dollar donations, sharing of information, and your support for our organizing.
We do this work because we know, deep in our hearts, that a better world is possible – but the only way to win it, is together.
