This week, the House concluded their final hearing this summer seeking answers about the GOP’s involvement in the January 6 insurrection and who is responsible for this act of white supremacy.
These hearings have made one thing crystal clear: There are members of Congress who violated their oath to protect our democracy. Specifically, Rand Paul.
The violent mob of insurrectionists stormed our capitol, beat, tased and degraded capitol police, and sought to kill the Vice President and members of Congress. But for Rand Paul, these recent hearings to seek accountability for this shameful day are nothing but a “partisan witch hunt.” Rand voted against conducting an investigation and still stands by his claims of a “stolen” election.
It’s shameful — but it is nothing new. For years, Rand Paul has been working to suppress our votes to keep his own seat. Kentucky has one of the worst records of voter disenfranchisement in our country’s history. For too long, massive groups of people, especially Black and brown communities, have been excluded and discouraged from voting. As a result, the number of people in Kentucky who don’t vote outnumbers those who do.
We know that a different type of politics is possible — and that’s what our movement is fighting for. Together, we have the power to replace Rand Paul and every politician who betrayed our democracy last January.
Together, we can save our Democracy,
Charles Booker
