Juneteenth

Stacey Abrams for Governor

Today is Juneteenth, a time to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. As we honor the anniversary of Jubilee, we recognize that this day requires more from us than mere recognition — we must meet it with imagination and action.

Our deep obligation is to create a world fueled by justice and steeped in equity. Juneteenth demands an acknowledgment of society’s failures, remedied by nothing less than persistent, determined improvement.

In action, this commitment means we cannot accept when voter suppression keeps citizens and their children in line for hours. We work to ensure that no Georgian and no American is afraid to drop their kids off at school, attend a religious service or go to the grocery store. We expand access to mental and physical health care. We increase public safety and reduce mass incarceration, address our failing prisons and enable the successful return of citizens who have served their time.

We decry the practices of those who profit from Black misery and we must build new systems that allow us to thrive.

Making that vision a reality will not be easy. It requires admitting we have real, endemic problems, while embracing that we have a spirit of innovation matched with a heritage of communal care. On this day, we celebrate our persistence — and our right to rise.

Sincerely,

Stacey
