Even though the tests have ended, these 31 chimpanzees are still languishing in a New Mexico laboratory.

We won’t give up the fight to end animal testing, because we know it’s possible to succeed. In 2015, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would no longer fund invasive testing on chimpanzees—and would move all government-owned chimps to sanctuary.

But for 31 chimpanzees at a New Mexico laboratory, that day is in jeopardy.

Although these chimpanzees are no longer being used in experiments, we won’t stop fighting until they are in sanctuary where they belong. Just like we won’t stop fighting to free all animals from testing—whether it’s for drugs, cosmetics, pesticides or chemicals. Last year we sued the NIH, pointing out that the agency was breaking the law by not retiring the chimps to a sanctuary. Thirteen chimps have died in this barren laboratory since NIH announced in October 2019 that it would not move any of the 44 chimps living in the lab at that time. If we don’t free the remaining 31 chimps, many of these primates could spend the rest of their lives inside a bleak laboratory facility—instead of the peaceful and natural environment of a sanctuary.
