BREAKING: Recall effort funded by tax-free stock from wealthy individuals

Campaign disclosure forms show that the recall effort has raised just over $4 million since November of last year.

And here’s the twist: Nearly a quarter of that money came in the form of just four stock contributions -- and the donors didn’t even have to pay taxes on it.

No one has bankrolled the recall effort more than William Oberndorf, a billionaire oligarch. He often supports conservative Republicans like Mitch McConnell. Oberndorf has given more than $600,000 to the recall -- roughly half of which came from a stock transfer.

Here’s the bottom line: The hallmark of the recall campaign has been accepting vast sums of money from billionaires and trying to hide that money. For months they’ve been trying to sell the idea they are in any way ‘grassroots’ even as they accepted six-figure checks from Republican donors.

We will never match the campaign war chests of these shady oligarchs who want to buy our city and reverse our momentum. But with your help, we can stop them by reminding voters what’s at stake in this election.

We are setting a goal of raising $25,000 by our next filing deadline on May 21st. Reaching this goal will allow us to fund our field and voter outreach programs fully. So we have to ask: Can you donate $25 or more to help us reach our goal by midnight on May 21st?

Right-wingers and “tech bros” are trying to use shady tax schemes and tricks to avoid campaign finance rules to subvert the will of the voters who elected me in 2019.

We can’t let them get away with it. With just a few weeks to go, Chesa needs your help now more than ever.

Thanks for your support,

Team Chesa Boudin

Chesa Boudin was elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2019 to reform our criminal justice system. Now, right-wingers  want to reverse our progress and return our city to a time when innocent people were locked away and police acted with impunity.

Please chip in today to keep up the fight to reform San Francisco's criminal justice system.
