Americans waste billions of hours and billions of dollars filing their taxes.
Even though, for people with relatively basic taxes, the IRS has all the information it needs to pre-fill forms and do the math.
The IRS has the authority — under a 1998 law passed by a Republican-majority Congress — to implement something called “return-free filing.”
- This commonsense reform — already in use in many other countries — would make it easier and less costly for millions of Americans to file their taxes.
- It would also greatly reduce how much money the IRS devotes to live customer support.
- And it would save everyday Americans the fear and frustration of making simple mistakes despite their best efforts to navigate convoluted tax forms.
Tell the IRS:
Stop making millions and millions of everyday Americans waste their own time and money filling out tax forms when you already have the information and can do the math. Use your authority under the Internal Revenue Service Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998 to implement “return-free filing” as soon as possible.

Thank you for taking action.
