This is scary. Right now the most important arms control treaty the United States is still a party to is set to expire in just under ONE YEAR.
And a year might seem like a lot of time. But we know that the federal government works slowly and every day Trump is creating and entangled in new crises and scandals that shift our attention and leave us scrambling. We must stay focused and raise an ENORMOUS alarm NOW.
Win Without War refuses to let the Trump administration continue recklessly dismantling the entire global nuclear arms control regime. But the terrifying reality is: He might do just that by letting the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) expire. So we’re gearing up for a critical fight — and we need you with us.
Can you make a $4 donation today to fuel our work to do everything we can to extend New START for another five years?
Some background: Ratified in 2011, New START built on previous nuclear weapons treaties to limit the number of deployable U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons to 1,550 — the lowest level since the Cold War nuclear arms race began. It also created new oversight, transparency, and accountability measures to ensure each country honored the agreement.
Failing to extend New START would set us back nearly half a century, to a dangerous time when U.S. and Russian (then-Soviet) nuclear arsenals were unrestricted.
Putin has offered to extend the treaty immediately. Trump should seize this opportunity, rather than send us back to the drawing board and waste decades of careful negotiation and strategic diplomacy.
Unfortunately, a race to the bottom seems to be the president’s M.O. Trump has already pulled the United States out of numerous treaties and agreements that made the world safer, like the Iran nuclear deal and the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. And not only has he already publicly hinted at simply letting New START expire, his administration has done close to nothing to prepare for extending the Treaty, meaning time could run out either way!
Jessie, we cannot let this happen. And we’re prepared to do all we can to spend the next year raising the alarm in the media, meeting with policy experts and members on the Hill, and mobilizing supporters like you to show this president and those that think like him that letting New START expire is politically costly and dangerous.
Will you support this work with a crucial $4 donation today?
And let’s be clear: New START is not enough. “Low yield” warheads and “limited” nuclear war are misnomers that minimize the devastating harm these weapons inflict. Win Without War is committed to a world free from the threat of nuclear war.
New START is a critical beginning to how we get there. We refuse to be dragged back into the global nuclear arms race of the past.
The clock is ticking.
Thank you for working for peace,
Shayna, Erica, Mariam, and the Win Without War team
