Sen. Mark Kelly on Trump’s Purge of Top Military Leaders and More
Sen. Mark Kelly tells Ben Meiselas why Trump’s military purges, handling of the Iran war, and demand for loyalty could leave lasting damage.
Sen. Mark Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and astronaut, joined MeidasTouch co-founder Ben Meiselas for a wide-ranging discussion about Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war and what Kelly sees happening inside the U.S. military.
Kelly did not mince words.
Six months into the war, Kelly discusses how the Trump regime entered the conflict without a strategic objective, a real plan, a timeline or a way out.
“They’re stuck and they don’t know what to do about it,” Kelly said. “And this president doesn’t have answers. He has no idea what he’s doing.”
Kelly, who flew 39 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm, also raised serious concerns about the removal of experienced military leaders. He said the military is supposed to remain apolitical, with service members swearing an oath to the Constitution rather than any individual president.
His concern is that Trump’s Pentagon is increasingly prioritizing personal loyalty.
“My sense is that they’re looking for people who are loyal to the president as an individual and his party, and that is not healthy for this nation, especially in the long term,” Kelly said.
Kelly also criticized Trump for publicly weighing in on technical military matters, including the design of aircraft carriers.
“I have a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering. I’m a test pilot. I’m an astronaut. I have 375 carrier landings,” Kelly said. “I would not even suggest to the Navy how to design systems on Navy ships.”
Trump, Kelly added, is “way out of his lane.”
The senator also expressed outrage over reported conditions facing sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and the regime’s treatment of service members during the prolonged deployment.
Kelly ultimately warned that repairing the damage to the military and America’s relationships around the world will require significant work long after Trump leaves office.
Watch Ben Meiselas’ full conversation with Sen. Mark Kelly above as they discuss the Iran war, Trump’s military leadership, conditions facing American service members and the national security consequences of Trump’s presidency.
