The Intercept has identified major holes in the government’s case against a group of alleged “antifa” activists recently sentenced to a combined 560+ years in prison following a protest outside ICE’s Prairieland Detention Center. Now, with several of the defendants appealing their convictions, local authorities are going to extraordinary lengths to avoid handing over records that may shed new light on a case already riddled with problems. You have to wonder, what the hell are they hiding? We intend to find out. But we’ve already racked up thousands of dollars in legal expenses using state open records laws to access potentially critical information, and we need an urgent influx of reader donations to see this fight through. Will you donate $10 to help The Intercept expose the truth about Prairieland? If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: The Prairieland convictions stem from a protest held last July 4 outside an ICE detention center in Alvarado, Texas, which the Trump Justice Department alleges was part of a sweeping antifa domestic terrorism conspiracy. The facts say otherwise. One of the defendants got 30 years for moving a box of leftist zines. Others did little more than wear all-black clothing and use the Signal app to communicate. The Intercept has been on the front lines covering this case from the start, exposing problems in the prosecution’s case and demanding the release of public documents relevant to the trial. However, local authorities have demonstrated utter contempt for open records laws via a labyrinthine process that seems like it was intentionally designed to deny the public access to information about the Prairieland case. But we refuse to back down until the government reveals every record we’re entitled to see.
