Less than 24 hours after Donald Trump renewed his calls for Jimmy Kimmel to be fired and criticized ABC for platforming his show, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced it doing an early license review for Disney-owned ABC stations—despite them not being up for review for another several years.1
This is clearly an escalation of the Trump administration’s attack on free speech. It is retaliation for ABC and Disney’s refusal to cower to Trump’s threats and censor their stations.
Broadcast stations are not meant to be propaganda megaphones for the Trump administration. Will you sign the petition demanding that the FCC stop its retaliation against media outlets that operate independently of the Trump administration?
Kimmel directly addressed the controversy surrounding a joke he made on-air and the subsequent backlash. “This was like déjà vu for me,” he noted, referencing Trump’s attacks against Kimmel last fall.2
In September, ABC and Disney temporarily suspended Kimmel’s show after Trump criticized Kimmel’s scathing on-air commentary about Republicans and MAGA figures exploiting Charlie Kirk’s murder.3 Public outrage pressured ABC and Disney to reinstate Kimmel’s show. But now the FCC is clearly punishing them for failing to fall in line.
It is an egregious display of overreach for the FCC to review ABC station licenses because they are not cowering to Trump’s demands. Add your name to the petition!

Eight Disney-owned ABC affiliates now have to prove to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr that they have been operating in the public interest. The deadline to file their licenses? May 28. Disney responded that it is complying with the request, expressing confidence that the company has acted in accordance with "the Communications Act and the First Amendment."4
If the FCC does not approve the renewal, Disney could lose the ability to operate local stations in major markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Stations would shut down across the country—and everyday Americans will lose access to critical network programming.
The FCC's retaliation against ABC and Disney will not just impact those broadcast stations; it will affect people across the country who rely on these stations for news, entertainment, and critical alerts. Will you sign the petition?
This isn’t the only time Carr has threatened to punish news stations for not parroting the messaging of this administration—he has repeatedly done so since Trump has been in office. He recently lashed out, warning he could pull TV licenses over coverage of the Iran War, claiming "fake news." He wrote that "broadcasters must operate in the public interest, and they will lose their licenses if they do not."5
Already, the threat of retaliation alone could have a chilling effect on other stations and media outlets worried about similar consequences. They may begin to preemptively censor content to avoid backlash from the Trump administration.
And that will have a disturbing and profound impact on what information and content we, as Americans, have access to.
Our government should not be in the business of telling the American people what to think, what to laugh at, what to say, and what to criticize. But that’s exactly what it is trying to do.
We refuse to allow Trump to weaponize the FCC to punish speech. Sign the petition to demonstrate our collective opposition NOW!
Thanks for all you do.
