Suddenly, the US military, purported defender of global democracy, was revealed to be the butcher and rapist of defenseless Vietnamese children, women, men—the very people America was supposedly saving from Communism. Reading about the carnage, looking at photos of corpses, it dawned on US civilians that My Lai might not be the only place where these things happened. And if these things happened, the federal government … must have known.
