Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey spent his Memorial Day at Delaney Hall—a private ICE prison in Newark where detainees had been on a hunger strike for four days. He listened to the people locked inside. He spoke with a pregnant woman who was denied prenatal care, and an 18-year-old separated from her mom who just wanted to graduate from high school this month. Governor Mikie Sherrill was refused entry at the front door. She didn’t back down. She stood outside the gates, talked with families of detainees, and said her denial raised “serious questions about what they are trying to hide from public view.” She is right to ask. They have plenty to hide. Kim walked outside and saw ICE rolling up in an armored vehicle. Armed agents lined up. Kim—a former diplomat—put himself between the agents and the crowd to keep anyone from getting hurt. ICE answered by pepper spraying him. Kim stayed calm and kept negotiating, pleading with them not to transfer the hunger strikers to Louisiana and Texas. Kim didn’t mince words: “Delaney Hall is a failure; it’s this administration’s failure. The only way to make this right is to shut it down.” The regime built Delaney Hall to be invisible. When ICE invaded Chicago last fall, the regime hit six protesters who got in their way with federal conspiracy charges carrying up to six years in prison. Among them—former Democratic congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh. The message from the regime was clear: get in our way and the DOJ will come for you. It backfired spectacularly. As it turned out, the DOJ had broken the rules to get the charges filed, and even kicked citizens off the grand jury who disagreed. When Federal Judge April Perry read the grand jury transcripts, she issued a scathing rebuke—saying she had “never seen the types of prosecutorial behavior” she saw in this case. Knowing they were beaten, the US Attorney walked into court and dropped every remaining charge. They can never refile them. A three-judge federal panel rejected Alabama’s new discriminatory congressional map this week. It drew district lines designed to wipe out the voting power of Black Americans in the state. The judges ruled it can’t be used. They were clear: “We cannot see our way clear to requiring Alabamians to cast their votes in the 2026 elections under a districting plan tainted by intentional race-based discrimination.” Here’s the kicker: two of the three judges on that panel were appointed by Trump. His own appointees looked at his party’s attempt to dilute Black voting power and refused. The fair map Alabamians used to elect Rep. Shomari Figures to Congress in 2024 stays in place. On Tuesday—the first day of early voting—more than 56,000 South Carolinians cast their ballots. It shattered the state record for the first day of a primary. To put that in perspective: in all of 2022, only around 125,000 voted across the entire two-week early voting period. South Carolina hit nearly half that total in a single day. Democrats called on voters to turn out early and kill Trump’s attempt to redraw the only majority-Black district in the state—the seat Rep. Jim Clyburn has held for more than three decades. They answered in a big way. Trump called Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey twice and phoned into a private meeting of GOP state senators. He was pressuring them to cancel the ongoing primary and redraw the seat to hand it to Republicans. The South Carolina GOP had every intention of helping Trump. The state House had already passed the rigged map the week before by a 74 to 37 vote. But the public pressure got too hot. On Tuesday afternoon, the Senate decided to adjourn until June 10—the day after the primary. Voters held the line, stopped the steal, and won. Kim should be prosecuted for assault. No citizen is allowed to do that. These goons must be held to account. What kind of place have we become? No, I have not been to an Ice Detention Center, but from what I’ve read & pictures I’ve seen, they are monstrous! I think Kim did exactly the right thing. No, I've never been to an ICE detection facility, or talked to anyone who has. I've read enough credible reports such as yours to know that should "not" be happening in this country. What happened to Senator Kim and the Governor both show me the criminal in the capital is competing with his idol using KGB tactics. He should be "Removed"! So the Feds had to withdraw those indictments... are those DOJ attorneys eligible for Disbarment Referrals. Who can make one? It is baffling to me how an ice detention center can deny access to members of government for oversight, then deter them by calling in reinforcements using illegal methods such as pepper spray and still find that there have been no arrests, no raids, no accountability. Showing up and calling this out is a small feat, but where are the actual punishments for breaking the law. Andy Kim should have had local police breaking down the doors, arresting everyone in sight and indictments for whatever the illegal statute is for deploying chemical agents on a peaceful gathering on public space. The expressions on those children's faces is both heartbreaking (for them and their loved ones held) and infuriating (towards this disgusting regime). I think it stands for the Enforcement Removal Operation arm of ICE. I keep wondering why the NJ Governor can’t get a search warrant for that jail. Is there a law that prohibits it??? I don't know, but probably because it's federal. Thank goodness, we have some more adults in the room I am so proud of the people of South Carolina. Lady Graham is one of the senators for the state and I hope he is sweating. When I lived in SC I would email Lady Graham weekly about his failings. I know he doesn't miss me but I think there are enough others who have taken up the flag for me. We the People need to stand strong and help our independent journalists. So happy to see how many lawsuits are being brought against Trump, so many failed lawsuits From Trump that are being kicked out of court, so many judges who are ruling in favor of the law. This makes me happy. I live in New Jersey. I have been proud of Andy Kim ever since I began to follow him when he first ran for Congress. He is the type of leader we need — if only the Senate was filled with decent, experienced and intelligent people like him! Those ICE agents should be prosecuted for their actions against our senator and all the protestors. Delany Hall is a disgrace to our state and our country! Had a long thought but just no, never been and should be outlawed. Senator Kim is a true democratic leader, and is undeserving of such disrespect and violation of his rights.
