Dear Friends,

I wanted to write to you about the deeply disturbing post made on social media this morning by President Trump, threatening the people of Iran by saying “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”

This is a pivotal, dangerous moment for our country. Let me tell you what I’m doing to address the rantings of our president and stop this war from escalating in the Middle East.

The first step I am taking is calling on Republicans to call Congress back into session. We have a job to do, and it is simply unacceptable for Republicans to keep us on a two-week recess while the President of the United States considers sending ground troops into Iran and threatens to commit war crimes against an entire nation of people. Congress’ role in authorizing any military action cannot be ignored any longer. Republicans need to grow a backbone, and bring us back to Washington immediately.

Donald Trump is unfit for office, and needs to be removed through any legal means necessary. I have voted twice in the past to impeach Donald Trump, and my concerns about his lawless behavior have only grown since then. I will swiftly support any articles of impeachment against Donald Trump.

In order for impeachment to be successful, we will need three House Republicans to have the courage to act independently and hold this President accountable for his lawlessness. I am working today to check in with multiple Republican colleagues to build bipartisan support for impeachment so that we can accelerate this timeline and remove Donald Trump from office as soon as possible.

This moment also requires transparency. In that regard, I am calling on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to testify in an open, public hearing in front of the House Armed Services Committee, which I sit on. We need answers on the strategic rationale behind the absurd military decisions made in recent weeks, and if this Administration isn’t willing to make their case in a public setting to the American people, that should tell you all you need to know about the lack of any legal or strategic justification for continuing this war.

Like you, I am alarmed by the words and actions that have come from Donald Trump. We need action right now, and I am committed to exploring every option and pulling every effective lever I can to hold Trump accountable and remove him from office.

I am working to stop this situation from spiraling out of control even further. Our voices matter, and we must continue to use them. I’ll keep you updated on my efforts to hold Trump accountable and end this reckless war of choice in Iran.
