Apparently, the horrific ICE raids, existing detention centers, and extralegal deportations are not enough for Trump. He and his administration have continued to up the ante on the inhumane treatment of Americans. We're talking about tens of billions (yes, billions with a b) of dollars being spent to purchase warehouses across this country and turn them into what can only be called concentration camps. ICE is preparing to spend $38 billion on a so-called 'new detention center model': buying up warehouse spaces and retrofitting them to hold nearly 100,000 people. Warehouses. Not facilities built with any concern for human dignity. Warehouses. This unprecedented funding provided by the GOP's so-called Big Beautiful Bill has enabled the administration to detain an increasing number of non-criminal immigrants. We're locking up people who've lived here for decades, folks who have never committed a crime. Detainees have reported rotten food, inadequate access to water, improper medical care, and physical abuse. Three people have died in one camp alone. And we're spending more on this? The administration's ICE acting director said at a conference, "We need to get better at treating deportation like a business... like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings." Amazon Prime. That's how this administration talks about abducting our neighbors and tearing families apart. Trump's secret police are armed en masse, wandering the streets, and going door to door to terrorize communities. And now we're building a permanent infrastructure (a deportation-industrial complex) to support it. Once an agency receives funding and begins hiring and entering contracts, expectations for continued funding become entrenched, making it difficult to reverse the trend. That's the point. They want this to be permanent. This is not who we are as Americans. Or at least, it's not who we're supposed to be. We're meant to be better than this, and we can be. It's time for us to take back the House, regain control of appropriations, and the stupidity of the Big Beautiful Bill as far from our nation as possible.
More soon, Jim |
