Monday Afternoon News Updates as Trump is Condemned at U.N. — 1/5/26Catch up on today's news, so far.By Ben Meiselas I just watched the emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council as Donald Trump spiraled online, posting about the 2020 election while world leaders blasted his administration’s unlawful invasion of Venezuela. As diplomats spoke about sovereignty, international law, and the danger of escalation, Trump was rage-posting conspiracy theories and recycling debunked lies. That is where the United States is right now. The Security Council convened because Trump ordered a military operation that forcibly seized Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and removed them from the country. The justification offered by the administration was not subtle. Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, told the Council that the United States views the Western Hemisphere as its domain and that Venezuela’s vast energy reserves cannot remain outside U.S. control. Waltz said, “We are not going to allow the western hemisphere to be used as a base of operation for adversaries and competitors and rivals of the United States…You cannot have the largest energy reserves the world under the control of adversaries.” Waltz insisted there was “no war” and no invasion, and described the operation as simply a “law enforcement” action. He claimed the U.S. had simply carried out a surgical arrest, facilitated by the military, of “indicted fugitives of American justice.” How very Putin-esque. Let’s be clear: this was a large-scale military strike on a sovereign nation, followed by the abduction of its head of state. Calling it law enforcement does not change what it was. Speaker after speaker condemned the United States. China’s deputy ambassador said Beijing was “deeply shocked” and “strongly condemns” what he called unilateral, illegal, and bullying acts by Washington. He warned that the U.S. had trampled Venezuela’s sovereignty and violated the most basic principles of the UN Charter, including the prohibition on the use of force. He urged the immediate release of Maduro and his wife and called for de-escalation and dialogue. That message was echoed across regions. The Danish ambassador delivered one of the most pointed interventions, reminding the Council that the inviolability of borders is not negotiable. Since the Venezuela attack, Trump has ramped up his threats against Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Russia, hardly a neutral actor given its own conduct, seized the opening Trump handed it. Moscow’s ambassador accused Washington of unparalleled cynicism and of barely concealing its true aim: unbridled control over Venezuela’s natural resources. He condemned what he called U.S. armed aggression and demanded the release of Venezuela’s “legitimately elected president.” The hypocrisy was obvious. But this represents yet another disastrous part of the fallout of Trump’s actions. When the United States violates the rules it once insisted upon, it loses any ability to credibly call out others who do the same, handing our adversaries like Russia and China an open lane to do as they please. The isolation of the U.S. position was complete. There was no chorus of allies rising to Trump’s defense. Instead, the UN’s own leadership weighed in. Through Under-Secretary-General Rosemarie DiCarlo, Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern that international law had not been respected. The statement emphasized the prohibition on the threat or use of force and warned that the maintenance of international peace depends on adherence to the Charter by all member states, especially permanent members of the Security Council. While all of this unfolded, Trump continued posting. And posting. And posting more. Voter fraud conspiracies, recycled long-disproven claims about voting machines, random images and memes, blah blah blah. At the same time, MAGA-aligned media and Republican officials moved in lockstep to provide cover. They repeated the “law enforcement” propaganda line, invoked Teddy Roosevelt, and pretended the invasion was about stopping drugs rather than seizing oil, even though Trump himself has said otherwise. They claimed Trump was “stabilizing the region” and that Americans were safer because of the operation. None of them grappled with the reality that Trump has rejected Venezuela’s democratic opposition, sidelined leaders who actually won elections, and signaled a willingness to work with figures from the existing regime so long as they deliver oil. What we’re witnessing aren’t figures looking to restore democracy to Venezuela, but rather ones who are engaged in authoritarian dealmaking to enrich oligarchs. Leaders across Europe, Asia, and Latin America have condemned the United States. Joint statements from countries including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, and Uruguay warn against any attempt by Trump to run Venezuela or exploit its resources. Japan’s prime minister cautioned that challenges to the international order are accelerating. Britain’s prime minister made clear that Greenland’s future belongs only to Greenland and Denmark, standing with Copenhagen against Trump’s threats. I’ll be honest. Watching the Security Council session as an American was painful. The country that once championed a rules-based order is now being cited as the example of what not to do. But the stakes are too high for us to look away. Here’s some other news we’re tracking:

JUST A FEW OF MANY COMMENTS:
So, how do you propose we do this? A year of this tyranny and not one person has attempted to remove him and this administration.
First get local control, get self-dependent (unhook your town from federal dollars which are a control mechanism), then override their federal mandates which are tied to these grants, and you take the country back in a groundswell. We can do this, the Founding Fathers show us the way. Here is how: https://tritorch.substack.com/p/apathy-is-the-fire-in-which-we-burn-v3
There is a reason why the love of money is considered to be the root of all evil and it’s not just what people are willing to do to for it, but also the control it grants to the person giving it over the person getting it.
Washington, for example, controls the states by granting them money on a rolling basis, and once they are hooked they threaten to take it away if the states do not do what Washington tells them to do. So they do it.
The solution is to get local, get self-dependent, get the common unity back in community by building webs of resilience with your neighbors, get control of your school boards, mayors office, and town councils, get to know your sheriff, get a garden in your lawn no matter how small, a single tomato plant is better than nothing, get a well (water is your most important resource hands down), get ready, get moving, get doing, and, if so inclined, get God
The democrats don’t hold the majority of the house or congress at the moment so unless they can get the republicans to shift over to their side there is not much they can do. But they are working behind the scenes. Back them up.
But, Jefferson worried that the people - and the argument goes back to Thucydides and Aristotle - are easily misled. He also stressed, passionately and repeatedly, that it was essential for the people to understand the risks and benefits of government, to educate themselves, and to involve themselves in the political process. Without that, he said, the wolves will take over.—Carl Sagan
Everyone's looking for a savior instead of looking in the mirror. We are indeed the ones we've waiting for.
Thank you. I am so sick and tired of the weak kneed whiners acting as if the Democrats have any power at all while Jellyfish Johnson is still holding the majority and able to call all shots.
The Democrats, yes, the Democrats forced the passing of the Epstein file legislation.
Remember the files? Don't ever, ever forget it. (This is not directed at you, Sandra, just an response to your excellent comment.
The power ALWAYS belongs to the people. It is simply a matter of them realizing it, and being bothered enough to take steps.
Where have you been for the last 9 months? The people are taking steps - No Kings demos, elections that have changed state majorities, 2 governers now firmly in the Democrat's camp - one was a party switch; state legislative bodies that had been super MAGA majorities aren't any more. Yes the people are taking steps.
The people are doing their part.....and of course you are cheering them on, right?
And what is the death count now as a result of the “law enforcement action” tRump ordered in order to abduct Meduro? Last I heard it was 80. I call BS! How does this type of action encourage peace in the world? tRump has no interest in keeping peace as much as he drools over the desire for a Peace medal.
Take back what was ours? Name what was ours? the oil in Venezuela belongs to the people there. It is NOT property of the USA. YOU are so misguided or just another terrorist enabler.
Take back. Control of our government, destiny, and freedom……
You are correct. Get trumps and his sick regime out of the WH. He needs to be hauled out by force because he is not going to come willingly.
And we need to send him to the World Court along with all his cabinet and administrators for trial. Because our Court is corrupt at the top. And then we need to see some executions like we had at Nuremburg.
You reminded me of this Lincoln Project video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOi2cYz5nXE
What about the basic REPRESSION OF U.S. CITIZENS? What about the ex-President of another Latin American country charged & convicted with serious drug trafficking that Trump just pardoned ?? It is ALL FUCKED UP !
Emperor Cheeto Of The Western Hemisphere
Questions ask why the US is involved in Venezuela? Cheeto ran a campaign counter to such an invasion of countries but of course he lied about so many promises since he wanted to stay out of jail
Despite the fact that Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves the type of oil that the country brings out of the ground is a dirty petroleum product because it requires many many steps to get a marketable product Venezuelan oil accounts for only 1% of the overall global oil production
So if it’s not about a valuable oil product, then is the US military Venezuelan capture of an awful tyrant like Maduro the real reason for this US military action? Maybe but corruption, power, and money always are the motivating factors for Cheeto who desires to be tough guy strongman who can become the bully of countries in the Western hemisphere It sets the tone to all other Western hemisphere countries
In the end there are many reasons Emperor Cheeto decided to arrest a fellow dictator He’s an impulsive malignant narcissist with loyalists willing to do his bidding and oil which is a gift to the American oil industry and its campaign donors is another piece of this bizarro puzzle Then there’s the Nobel Peace Prize Venezuelan activist who Cheeto flipped off when she offered the US help Polling numbers suck and health insurance costs are going up for millions And the action does serve as a great distraction from the haunting Epstein files and the news networks are swallowing the bait
Five years ago tomorrow the MAGA MOB/CULT did to the U.S.Capitol what the Trump reguime did in Venezuela yesterday. Their leader - The Orange Phlegm - is patently criminally insane. His objectives are identical to the those of Goebbels, Stalin, Mussolini, and other dictators. And his followers and cult members are so far down the rabbit hole they will never see daylight again.
Denmark is a Member of the NATO Alliance. Greenland was granted "Home Rule" in 1979, but it is still controlled and overseen by Denmark overall. Therefore, Greenland is de facto, indirectly a Member of NATO too.
Canada was a founding Member of the NATO Alliance in 1949.
According to a USA Today article just published earlier today, Rufus Gifford, the former U.S. ambassador to Denmark under the Obama Administration, said in January 2025, that the entire alliance would be compelled to respond to any military action against Greenland due to Denmark's membership.
Therefore, per the above factual context, if the United States of America attempts to "annex" either Greenland, and therefore indirectly the sovereign possession of Denmark, or my Country, Canada, the other Members of the NATO Alliance would be compelled to come to the defense of both Countries under the terms of Article 5.
This implies that either the Trump Administration is fully aware of these facts, and everything that Trump says regarding his threats against either Greenland or Canada is bluster OR Trump simply doesn't believe that the other Members of NATO will risk a war with America by coming to the aid of either Country? He would be sadly mistaken.
If it is to be required, I will gladly utilize all of the strength contained within my early sixties body and fight against the American Military following Trump's unconstitutional and unlawful orders to invade Canada in order to seize our resources! I am sure that the majority of the millions of my fellow Canadians will do so as well.
Assuming that other NATO Alliance Countries would actually come to the defense of either Greenland or Canada - with France and the United Kingdom both being nuclear armed - then America will have quite a fight on their hands!
How ironic it is that the United States - in only a few months time no less - has quickly morphed from being the leading Member of the NATO Alliance, with the most powerful Military providing its umbrella of additional protection to the entire Membership, to being one of our greatest threats!
Putin and Xi must be swooning with great satisfaction!
This would appear to be a profoundly dangerous situation?
》Only focusing on the terrible things the Republican Party is doing and ignoring what the Democrats do makes you not all that different than the Trump cult. Speaking of which, getting rid of him and voting in democrats won’t solve anything. You liberals are not leftists, you're part of the problem. You Democrat supporters are incredibly ignorant and propagandized on many a topic.
》If you think the United States is a democracy or was one prior to Trump and/or that you can vote your way to a better country under the corrupt bourgeois power structure, then you're not only poorly educated, but delusional as well.
》Real leftists don't support the democratic party, Reformist/Trotskyist individuals and organizations, the US military and empire, NATO, No Kings, Mamdani, Bernie, AOC, mRNA's, etc. The fact of the matter is that getting rid of Trump and voting in democrats won't solve the problem. That of capitalism. Because you haven't developed the skill of critical media literacy, you always seem to assume that those who are reporting factual and educational material are they themselves lying because you simply don't know any better. Refer to the information I've collected on my website via my profile regarding the evils of capitalism. Start with the Dialectical Materialism page. 》Lastly. In terms of the United States. We must never salute and show respect towards the American flag. The United States was founded on genocide and built with slavery, with the United States empire responsible for countless deaths. The American flag is soaked in blood. The only time to smile when in the presence of the flag is when it's on fire or being torn to shreds. When it comes to holidays like Independence Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day, that they are not worth celebrating as they are about brainwashing people that the United States is a great country and reinforcing that lie for those who already believe it. These holidays, I would argue, are primarily about selling and reinforcing the lie that service to the United States military industrial complex somehow made the country and that of the world a better place. After you take the time to learn about the history of the United States and its actions, you'll hopefully come to the same conclusion that I have, which is that there is NOTHING honorable about choosing to be a pawn for the military industrial complex in service to the bourgeoisie, or capitalists if you prefer. The fact of the matter is that the United States bullies and terrorizes the rest of the world as it refuses to take care of its own citizens, because of this I can't help but look at the United States' flag in disgust. The ONLY time when it was acceptable to support the troops and that of the military was during WW2. That's it. But even then, the United States didn't win the war. The Soviet Union did. The United States just swooped in at the last minute to do some minor cleanup and took all the credit. Almost immediately after the dust settled, the bourgeoisie wasted no time in stabbing the Soviet Union in the back by spreading anti-communist propaganda to get the public to fear and hate everything that gave power and any resemblance of freedom and prosperity to the proletariat. Now, if you know someone who has "served" and was injured or killed. Don't get mad at me for speaking truth to power. Direct your anger towards the United States government for sending them off to die in a pointless war, conflict, or military operation that the United States instigated. Let me be absolutely clear. Although I disagree with Veterans and military personnel, in general, for their choice to be a willing pawn for the military industrial complex who I feel are undeserving of an honor, that does not mean I hate them. Unless they were participants in war crimes and are proud of slaughtering people, whether directly or indirectly, that's a different story. People who are proud of killing others who wish they could do it over and over again, those are sick and twisted individuals. That caveat aside, I believe everyone deserves to have their needs met with a government that actually cares about the well-being of people both here and abroad. In conclusion, the underlying reason for all these wars and conflicts is that the United States needs oil to back up the petro dollar. Without the dollars influence and buying power, the United States loses most, if not all, of its hegemony and economic stranglehold over others. So, basically, the problem is that of capitalism. With that said, though, by no means does that mean other countries are innocent in their foreign affairs, but the United States is by far the worst. It's not even a contest.
