Thank you for contacting me about animal welfare. It was good to hear from you.

Throughout my career in Congress, I have always placed a high priority on working to protect our nation's wildlife and ensure the humane treatment of animals. Because of my advocacy, the Humane Society of the United States has consistently given me a 100 percent score on animal protection issues, including most recently in 2023.

On February 7, 2023, I introduced the Arctic Refuge Protection Act (S. 282), which would restore critical protections to the National Arctic Wildlife Refuge. On June 21, 2023, I also introduced the Sea Turtle Rescue Assistance Act (S. 2086), which would create a grant program for the rescue of stranded sea turtles. Last Congress, I was also a cosponsor of the Big Cat Public Safety Act (P.L. 117-243), which President Biden signed into law on December 20, 2022. This legislation prevents the private breeding, possession, purchase, or transportation of large wild cats like lions, tigers, and panthers.

This Congress, I also joined my colleagues in urging the Senate Appropriations Committee to include adequate funding in the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations Bill for vital wildlife conservation programs like the National Wildlife Refuge System, Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and key animal welfare programs under the FDA. 

I will continue to work in the Senate to prevent animal cruelty and ensure that all animals are treated humanely.
