| Laxmi Drew Laughs From The Crowd
To the confused delight of bystanders, Laxmi wandered Mumbai markets begging. People would give the elephant junk food … and give her owner money. Laxmi’s bloated round body was almost cartoon-like, but it masked injuries, severe malnutrition and exploitation. This was all part of the scam. The elephant’s extreme weight combined with walking endlessly on hot pavement wreaked havoc on her body. She was only 18 years old, but her shocking physical impairment meant she wouldn’t have lived long. One stumble, fall, or impact with a vehicle and she would have died a slow and painful death on the roadside. | |

| Abuse takes many forms, and for Laxmi it was exploitation. Her balloon-like shape was the twisted attraction that provided her endless sweet fried foods, and her owner with cash-in-hand. But thanks to kind supporters like you, we rescued Laxmi and she lives a kind, healthy life now. She is finally free from exploitation. After seeing these photos, it’s hard to imagine this is the same elephant. These remarkable transformations are only possible because of compassionate people like you. Your end-of-year gift today can give freedom from exploitation to more elephants like Laxmi. | |
