Trump just signed an executive order to end federal funding for PBS and public radio.1 Even though the White House doesn’t have the legal authority to gut this funding, Trump will stop at nothing to destroy public media.
That’s why the U.S. House is set to vote next week on a bill that would destroy PBS and public radio2 — a central part of Trump’s plan to eliminate public media and allow right-wing disinformation to dominate TV, radio, and the internet.
If Republicans succeed in stripping $1.1 billion from public broadcasting, they will take a giant step closer to a Trump-friendly media takeover. Trump’s campaign to destroy PBS and public radio will succeed unless we put pressure on our elected officials in Congress.
The CEO of PBS called Trump’s executive order “blatantly unlawful” and said it would threaten its ability to serve the public.3
This is the latest, and most serious, of Trump’s attacks on public media. He recently said Republicans must “defund” public media, calling PBS “radical left monsters.”4 His FCC chair launched a sham investigation targeting public media outlets, Elon Musk keeps spouting lies about PBS and public radio, and Marjorie Taylor Greene held a phony DOGE committee hearing to attack public media.
Trump is even turning his office into a propaganda machine, starting a White House website to push pro-Trump news and “circumvent the mainstream media to present itself in a positive light.”5
Trump’s loyalists in Congress are ready to support his executive order and proposal to strip funding from PBS and public radio. We need to show Congress that Americans continue to overwhelmingly support public media.
Thanks for taking action,
