A REAL ID is not required to vote in any state. But since today is the deadline for REAL ID requirements for commercial air travel, we are seeing a lot of confusion and misinformation about REAL ID.
VoteRiders is the nation’s leading organization focused on voter ID issues. We are a nationally trusted resource for accurate ID information. Share our resources on REAL ID so people understand what REAL ID is, who needs one, and for what:
A REAL ID is NOT required to vote in any state! Some states only issue REAL IDs, but each also accepts other forms of ID to vote. @VoteRiders is here to help! Use the link below to get in touch
REAL ID is a set of national security standards for states to follow when they issue driver's licenses and state ID cards.
After May 7, 2025, a REAL ID will be required to board a US commercial flight. REAL ID will also be required to access certain federal facilities.
Today is not the last day to get a REAL ID. If you do not have plans to fly commercially right away, you may not need a REAL ID in the near future or at all.
However, the influx of people seeking a REAL ID — and the confusion created by the switch to REAL ID for air travel — is creating backlogs at ID-issuing officesand making wait times longer for documents like birth certificates. That will make it harder for people who do need an ID to vote to get appointment times and documentation.
We’ve already seen an increase in the number of calls and texts to our Helpline asking about REAL ID, and partners have reported confusion across the country — including folks who already have REAL ID but don’t realize it.
