Deportations First, Due Process Second?4.7.25Happy Monday and welcome back to Common Sense, your source for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment. We hope you enjoyed your weekend. SCOTUS clears way for continued extra-judicial expulsions from the USA… “The Supreme Court on Monday allowed President Donald Trump to enforce the Alien Enemies Act for now, handing the White House a significant victory that will let immigration officials rely on a sweeping wartime authority to rapidly deport alleged gang members. The unsigned decision in the case, the most closely watched emergency appeal pending at the Supreme Court, lets Trump invoke the 1798 law to speed removals while litigation over the act’s use plays out in lower courts. The court stressed that people deported going forward should receive notice they are subject to the act and an opportunity to have their removal reviewed.” SCOTUS to Trump: Take your time getting innocent man out of El Salvador prison… “The Supreme Court on Monday temporarily paused a court-imposed midnight deadline to return to the US a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, agreeing to a request from President Donald Trump that will give the justices more time to consider the case. Chief Justice John Roberts granted the ‘administrative stay,’ a move that will extend the deadline until the court hands down a more fulsome decision in the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was deported on March 15.” Finance expert has four tips for surviving Trump’s tariffs… Personal finance author and Washington Post columnist Michelle Singletary joined NPR to discuss how Americans can best absorb the hit of Trump’s tariffs and feel less financial pain. Her advice includes: 1. Don’t go out and stock up on goods. 2. Go ahead and make that big purchase – IF you were already planning on it. 3. Otherwise, it's time to save money – especially if you're worried about job loss. 4. Don't look at your retirement account portfolio. “Unsourced ‘headlines’ about a potential ‘90-day pause in tariffs’ sent markets into a state of turbulence Monday morning… as investors sought any indication of a reprieve from the Trump administration’s new levies. The problem: It wasn’t true. The White House swiftly denied the rumor shortly after it began to circulate online.” (CNN) “Trump threatens additional 50 percent tariff on China” (CBS) Musk likely to be toxic in Virginia’s gubernatorial race this year – the state is home to many federal workers who were targets of DOGEsh*t mass firings… Politico reports, “Democrats believe they have an even stronger argument against President Donald Trump and Musk’s government-slicing Department of Government Efficiency in Virginia, where the state economy depends heavily on the business of Washington and thousands of federal workers are facing layoffs. ‘This is where DOGE is on display,’ said DLCC President Heather Williams. ‘Virginia is sort of an epicenter for the DOGE destruction and its impact on workers and communities.’ The state has historically been a strong bellwether for the midterms, and Democrats believe that the map for them has significantly widened less than three months into Trump’s second term — a reflection of how the party views battlegrounds across the country in the days after Musk’s involvement with the Wisconsin race backfired for the GOP.” Today’s Furry Friend Meet this precious boy who for days he wandered around with a bucket on his head and refused help. Once he finally accepted help, his fortunes changed. Today’s Buzz For many fans of The Handmaid’s Tale, it feels too much like real life… Sixth and final season begins May 8 on Hulu… The Hollywood Reporter writes, “In March, a Texas midwife was arrested for allegedly performing illegal abortions (and practicing medicine without the appropriate license). She became the first health care provider criminally charged in the aftermath of Texas’ 2022 abortion ban. The arrest prompted horror and instigated one of left-leaning social media’s favorite doomscrolling games: declaring that each new diminution of rights and bodily autonomy proves that we have gone from figuratively living in The Handmaid’s Tale to more literally transitioning toward a Gilead-like nation.” Check back in tomorrow evening for the next edition of Common Sense. |
