Donald Is Coming For The 14th Amendment

Hello, happy Monday and St. Patrick’s Day, and welcome back to Today’s American News, your source for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment.

Chuck Schumer’s vote for GOP funding bill has Democratic base fuming… After Schumer’s vote last week to pass the GOP government funding bill, which was opposed by 38 members of the caucus he leads, his team is trying to soothe tensions with progressive groups. It’s not working, writes Politico. The group Indivisible called for him to step down as minority leader. He cancelled book tour events scheduled for this week, with a spokesperson citing “security concerns.” In other words, his team expected crowds of protesters. Schumer has done damage control, giving interviews to CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post, but those interviews have done little to calm grassroots anger. He’s in for a tough ride, and deservedly so.

Putin and Trump to speak tomorrow; poll shows Americans support Ukraine’s cause… NPR has a detailed run-down of what Ukraine and Russia each want out of talks to end Russia’s invasion, writing “President Trump will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday as the U.S. pursues a ceasefire deal in Ukraine. White House officials say they're cautiously optimistic” they can negotiate a 30-day ceasefire. (OUR TAKE: Russia will never agree to a U.S.-led plan that Ukraine has agreed to.) Meanwhile, NBC News is out with a new poll: “A majority of American voters say their sympathies lie more with Ukraine than Russia in the war between the two countries. At the same time, nearly half say they think President Donald Trump favors Russia, while most of the remainder believe he favors neither, according to the new national NBC News poll. Sixty-one percent of registered voters choose Ukraine when asked which of the two countries has their sympathies more, while just 2% say Russia. Another 35% say they are more sympathetic to neither side, while 2% are not sure. When asked where they believe Trump’s sympathies are, 49% choose Russia, 40% say they think Trump favors neither side, and 8% choose Ukraine. Another 3% say they are not sure.”

Trump Administration defies judge’s order to turn around deportation flights… ABC News reports, “A federal judge, who is conducting a ‘fact-finding’ hearing Monday over whether the Trump administration knowingly violated a court order when it handed over more than 200 alleged gang members to El Salvadoran authorities over the weekend, told DOJ attorneys it was a “heck of a stretch" for them to argue that his order could be disregarded. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, in verbal instructions issued during a hearing on Saturday, told the government to turn around any aircraft that had already departed the country if they were still in the air. However, sources said top lawyers and officials in the administration made the determination that since the flights were over international waters, Boasberg's order did not apply, and the planes were not turned around.”

Trump claims Biden’s pardons are not legitimate because he used an autopen… Though many presidents have used an autopen, Trump is attempting to declare Biden’s pardons, specifically of the January 6 committee members who Biden expected Trump to prosecute, to be null and void because of Biden’s autopen use. We know, ridiculous. CBS News has a good breakdown:

Today’s Buzz

White Lotus was absolutely wild last night (SPOILERS)… Mike White's hit HBO show The White Lotus episode last evening had, as OUT reports, “naked Russian men, to two brothers kissing, to a giant lizard, to Parker Posey's brilliant Southern drawl. But the moment the internet can't stop talking about is a rollercoaster tour de force monologue delivered by a new character played by Oscar winner Sam Rockwell.”
