Brace—Trump's Trade War Begins Tomorrow1.31.25Happy Friday, readers! Welcome back to Today’s American News, your source for news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment. Guard your wallet, America. Trump’s tariffs start tomorrow… Look out. In the latest chapter of Trump chaos, middle-class tax hikes are coming in the form of tariffs against three of America’s largest trading partners. And those tariffs begin tomorrow. Reuters summarizes the development this way: “Canada and Mexico face 25% levies, China looking at 10% above current tariffs. Oil from Canada will be taxed at 10%, more oil and gas tariffs expected in mid-February.” The three countries targeted have vowed to retaliate strongly, and there will be no winners. Economists warned voters that Trump would be bad, and this is what they meant. Pentagon “shocked” by Trump order sending immigrants to Guantanamo… Politico reports: President Donald Trump’s plan to use Guantanamo Bay to detain migrants thrusts the Pentagon into a challenging, costly new effort just as officials vow to refocus the military on its core mission. The recent executive order to move thousands of noncitizens to an aging military base in Cuba came as a shock to the Pentagon. Officials are now rushing to come up with a plan to house up to 30,000 people, far more than the 780 detainees who stayed in a detention camp on the base during the peak of the war on terror.” Another day in the presidency of Donald Trump. At least he has Pete Hegseth now. Yikes. Trump’s digital bookburning targets LGBTQ, HIV, STIs, teen health, climate change… Hold on to your progress and science because we are living in an era of digital bookburning with Donald Trump lighting every match. “At the direction of the Trump administration, the federal Department of Health and Human Services and its agencies are purging its websites of information and data on a broad array of topics,” NPR reports. By order of Trump, the USDA website will no longer have information on climate change, because what could temperature, rainfall, and natural disasters possibly have to do with agriculture. Dems will elect new party chair tomorrow… Tomorrow, Democratic National Committee party members will elect a new chair. Top candidates are Minnesota state party chair Ken Martin, Wisconsin state party chair Ben Wikler, and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. NBC News reports the new chair “will take the reins of the fundraising, spending and staffing plans for an organization that spent just shy of $1 billion the last four years. While the national party organization helps set the party’s message and can serve as a home base for a party out of the White House, whoever wins Saturday's vote will be more in charge of laying groundwork for a Democratic renaissance than leading them back to power himself.” Today’s Buzz ‘Little House On The Prairie’ remake coming to Netflix… Those of us who grew up on Laura Ingalls and Nellie Olsen are celebrating the Deadline’s scoop about a Netflix remake, which a showrunner promises will “adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st century audience.” Reruns of the 1970s series were played regularly through the 80s and 90s, and those same episodes are trending as of late on Peacock.
Have a great weekend–and catch up with Today’s American News again on Monday. |
