2024 IN REVIEW

The Best and Worst of 2024

With 2024 in the rearview, Democracy Docket is reflecting on the highs and lows, the wins and losses, of the past year. Beyond our diligent coverage of the election and voting rights litigation, the staff found joy where we could — in movies, TV shows, albums and the sweet satisfaction of seeing Matt Gaetz lose not one but two jobs in a little over a week. Read more here.

TEAM-WORK

The Most-Clicked Democracy Docket Articles in 2024

The lookback continues with a review of Democracy Docket’s most-clicked articles last year. The results show that readers were most interested in political and election-related developments, state-level voting reforms and, unsurprisingly, Donald Trump and his ties to Project 2025. Read more here.

VOTING

The People and Groups Who Tried to Disenfranchise Voters in 2024

There’s a reason why the 2024 election was the most litigated in history. There was a lot at stake and, because of that, Republican leaders and special interest groups fought tooth and nail to try and disenfranchise as many voters as they could before one of the most consequential elections in recent history.

Throughout 2024, Democracy Docket exposed and dug into some of the more egregious people and groups behind anti-voting litigation and other legal efforts to purge voters, gain access to voter rolls and overall tried to make it harder for more people to vote. Read more about the people and groups who tried to suppress the vote.

OPINION

Trump’s Presidency Will Unleash Right-Wing Sheriffs Across America

“Donald Trump was clear throughout his campaign that he would give law enforcement a new mandate for violence,” Democracy Docket Guest Author Jessica Pishko writes. “He promised them “one really violent day” and has fantasized about engaging in Duterte-style tactics. Sheriffs have the most to gain under Trump’s presidency.” Read more here.

NEW EPISODE

The Issue with Democrats and the Media with Jen Rubin

Washington Post opinion columnist Jen Rubin joins Marc to discuss how media companies are capitulating to President-elect Trump, what it actually means to "find common ground" and what they're doing to prepare for a second Trump presidency. Watch it here.

What We’re Doing

A new year means new resolutions, and the Democracy Docket team is thinking about their goals for 2025. Email Operations Coordinator Leila Fusenig said she wants to take up running next year. “I am an avid walker but am trying to challenge myself to take my cardio to the next level.”

Graphic Designer Madison Coviello said she plans to level up her skincare routine. “I'm currently obsessed with the Skin Earth Vitality podcast and dermatologist Dr. Shereene Idriss's Youtube content. They come from two opposite ends of the spectrum, but both very knowledgeable and inspiring!” What are your resolutions?
