Our government outpaces every other country in the world on defense spending by a landslide. Our defense spending has been higher than that of the next nine top spending countries combined. What this means is that a huge portion of your tax dollars goes to the Pentagon. And what has that investment brought you? Costly and ineffective boondoggles like the F-35 Lightning II; staggeringly overpriced spare parts, marked up by tens to thousands of percent of their worth; and hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of drones that hardly anyone is trained to operate. The Pentagon has failed seven financial audits in a row — seven! — meaning we don’t have a full accounting of how your tax dollars were spent, what inventory was bought, or even where that inventory is. Fighting against wasteful Pentagon spending has been a cornerstone of POGO’s work for four-plus decades. We work hard to secure a national security budget that actually prioritizes strategy and people over profit. In 2025, we will be working to strengthen congressional oversight of the Pentagon, pushing reforms that will close the loopholes that enable wasteful spending, and advocating for the safety of service members and their families. Will you join us? You do not need to accept the wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars — there’s a different, better way of doing things and we’re determined to bring about that change. Every victory we’ve had in this work has been thanks to supporters like you. The Pentagon will not be held accountable without you — so power this important work today. Here’s to making progress in 2025. Greg Williams Director of the Center for Defense Information Project On Government Oversight |
