Welcome back and good Monday evening! Today’s American News brings you news and analysis on the circus that is American politics and entertainment, and we’ve got some good, bad, and ugly headlines in this edition.
Americans prepare for Trump’s threats of 2025 deportations… “A lot of us are honestly celebrating Christmas together thinking, ‘Oh my God, is this the last time we get to spend Christmas with our family members?’” Those are the words of an immigrant advocate weary of promised deportations that could come next year. Donald Trump has promised to carry out “the largest deportation program in American history” after he takes office again. NBC news has a heartbreaking story on the widespread weariness over what a second Trump term could mean for communities across the country.
Disgusting Gaetz ethics report is leaked… Politico obtained a copy of the House Ethics Committee’s report on former Congressman Matt Gaetz’s abhorrent behavior. We’ll spare you the details here. Republicans initially blocked release of the report, and new details have emerged of Gaetz’s personal intervention to seal the report. “The Committee concluded there was substantial evidence that Representative Gaetz violated House Rules, state and federal laws, and other standards” and that he “knowingly and willfully sought to impede and obstruct” the investigation. Gaetz may or may not face criminal consequences, though he resigned from Congress and won’t become Trump’s attorney general.
Biden takes action to change death sentences to life in prison… President Biden has again made good on his promise with regard to commutations and pardons by removing 37 individuals from death row, changing their sentences to life in prison. Said Biden, “These commutations are consistent with the moratorium my Administration has imposed on federal executions, in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder.” Three federal death row inmates remain on death row following Biden’s action.
Happy holidays from childless cat ladies everywhere… NPR released a beautiful collection of holiday cards from single ladies, and we love them. This year, Republicans like JD Vance have used their platforms to attack who he calls “childless cat ladies” while Donald Trump continues hating Taylor Swift. Thankfully they won’t stop women, regardless of the families they have chosen and love, from enjoying the holidays.
