Tell AIG: Don’t support the Rio Grande methane gas facility

 

The Rio Grande LNG project — a proposed facility for exporting methane gas in Brownsville, TX — is one of the most controversial gas projects in North America: Methane gas has more than *80 times* the warming power of carbon dioxide after it reaches the atmosphere Methane is highly volatile — an explosion at a similar LNG facility in Freeport, TX in 2022 caused a massive fireball and blast that knocked people off their feet and injured a child in the neighboring community And this methane export facility destroys ancestral lands and sacred sites of the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, who oppose the facility Here’s the bottom line: The Rio Grande LNG project would damage our environment, climate, and Indigenous rights. But it can’t be built without insurance, and that’s where you can make a difference: Big insurers like AIG have the power to stop this project by refusing to insure it and all methane expansion. Tell AIG executives to publicly stop insuring Rio Grande LNG. Indigenous leaders, other local organizers, and national environmental groups have succeeded in delaying or ending plans for gas export facilities along the Gulf Coast. And our collective action has already convinced another major insurer, Chubb, to rule out support for the project. So we know that, if we all work together, it is possible to stop the Rio Grande LNG project, protect Gulf Coast communities, and move away from destructive methane gas.
