THIS ELEPHANT’S LEG WOUNDS WERE SHOCKING This week we’re sharing memorable moments in Wildlife SOS history. Inspiring, concrete examples of your donations working to change the lives of individual animals. Today, we’re sharing magnificent Jai!
It’s no secret that bull elephants in musth are hard to handle. They belong in the wild, so in captivity bulls face some of the harshest treatment. But with Jai, even our veteran rescue team was shocked with what they found … Jai’s legs were bound tightly in spiked chains, and his severe wounds were infected and uncared for. His suffering was unimaginable. The photo above was taken after Jai had been seized by officials, but before Wildlife SOS could give him the complete care he desperately needed. We fought for him on site for days, treating his wounds and giving him some relief, but his "owner" was unwilling to free him from chains.
We were finally able to free Jai and bring him to the safety of the Elephant Hospital for extensive care and treatment. But Jai’s “owner” wouldn’t give up … our legal battles for Jai had just begun. Well-funded elephant owners’ groups wanted to see us fail, and challenge after challenge was filed in court to distract us from our important work. Jai’s story is one of perseverance, and it showed us his first steps of freedom were just the start of his long fight.
We’re thrilled to tell you that after two-and-half years of legal battles, we’ve finally won! Jai has won! A formal announcement will be coming soon. If it wasn’t for our passionate supporters, Jai would surely be back in chains and not in the loving care of Wildlife SOS. Thank you!
If Jai's story has inspired you, can we count on you to give other animals the same fighting chance? Please donate today and help save India’s wildlife
