Daily Dose of Democracy:
Trump’s favorite extreme think tank is jumping ship for DeSantis
The ongoing feud between the two repugnant Floridians jostling to lead the GOP into the abyss and beyond in 2024 reached new heights as the radical-right Claremont Institute, which played a crucial role in normalizing Trump's total bullshit Big Lie scheme to overturn his 2020 election loss, abandoned Don for Ron in next year's presidential race. Sad!

Despite local pilot programs in select cities, national reparations for slavery still firmly opposed by most non-Black Americans
Local reparations programs — in about a dozen cities and the state of California — have renewed hopes for an eventual national policy to compensate for for the reprehensible crime of chattel slavery. But after decades of lobbying and three years of a national reckoning over race, non-Black Americans overall remain strongly opposed to the idea, driven in part by what Yale social psychologist Michael Kraus calls a "collective willful ignorance" on the nation's persistent wealth gap.

Deputies accused of shoving guns in mouths of 2 Black men
In a shocking yet familiar refrain, several deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff's Department being investigated by the Justice Department for possible civil rights violations have been involved in at least four violent encounters with Black men since 2019 that left two dead and another with lasting injuries. Two of the men allege that sheriff’s deputies shoved guns into their mouths during separate encounters. In one case, the deputy actually pulled the trigger, leaving the man with wounds that required parts of his tongue to be sewn back together. Serve and protect, eh?
Mass protests rage in Israel as unions join historic strike
Israel has been brought to a standstill by a historic general strike, as anger and unrest at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's nefarious plans to weaken the judiciary and undermine fundamental democracy reached fever pitch. The protests that have been raging for months escalated over the weekend and continued into Monday, when hundreds of thousands of strikers from basically every industry brought much of the country to a halt.

Parts of Twitter's source code illegally leaked online
Some parts of Twitter’s source code — the fundamental computer code on which the social network runs — were leaked online, creating further challenges for billionaire tech bozo Elon Musk, who's been hemorrhaging cash and credibility during his disastrous time at the helm of the social media behemoth.
Anti-abortion Republicans are pushing state legislation to undermine election results to impose and enforce restrictions
Individual liberty! Personal freedom! Don't tread on me! The best government is that which governs least! Except when it doesn't. Which is when we say so. Because, actually, we're full of shit. And we want to control women's bodies and impose theocratic morality codes on the masses according to cherry-picked passages from our favorite book. Got it? Good.
Philly residents told to drink bottled water after chemicals spill into Delaware River
Bucks County, Pennsylvania health officials said Sunday that a leak late Friday evening at the Trinseo Altuglas chemical facility in Bristol Township spilled between 8,100 and 12,000 gallons of a water-based latex finishing solution into the river. Wonderful.
"Lessons have not been learned": FDA knew of positive test months before latest infant formula recall
A recent recall of infant formula was announced nearly three months after Food and Drug Administration officials first learned that some products at a major plant had tested positive for bacteria — an unconscionable delay that mirrors the agency’s exasperatingly slow response to reports of food safety problems and infant deaths ahead of last year’s massive recall over the same type of bacteria.

Today’s Action: Tell Congress to deliver federal LGBTQ+ protections!
Anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is at an all-time high as bigots across the country openly advocate for the ostracization and condemnation of one of America’s most vulnerable communities. Transgender people are at the center of the vitriol as state legislations across the country debate their right to exist. It is our duty to protect this community from what is increasingly being labeled as a transgender genocide. It’s disgusting that this type of governing is what we are subjected to in 2023, in what is supposed to be a “free” nation.
The ability to persecute others is not something that makes America “free.” What is important is the ability for all, regardless of identity, to live an equitable life. We have a very long way to go towards achieving that goal. The fact is, conservatives have been scapegoating and persecuting the oppressed for centuries — and doing so under the guise of religious freedom.
Despite Democrats’ best effort to pass the Equality Act last congressional session, our elected officials have yet to deliver wide-reaching protections for LGBTQ+ people. With the onslaught of laws targeting LGBTQ+ freedoms, targeted mass shootings, and the deeply troubling rise in hate crimes, we simply can’t wait any longer to secure protections for our marginalized communities.
We must not allow protections for the LGBTQ+ community, and ESPECIALLY transgender people, to fall by the wayside. Whether by reviving the Equality Act or putting forth new legislation, we must act swiftly. Every second Congress waits puts another person at risk.
PS — Please don't forget to sign the petition telling Congress to ban Trump from running in 2024, and be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
