Google paying $29.5 million to settle lawsuits over user location tracking
The tech behemoth agreed to pay a total of $29.5 million to settle two lawsuits — in Indiana and Washington, DC — over the company’s nefarious customer tracking practices. Google previously agreed in November to pay a record $391 million to settle a separate investigation into its tracking practices launched by a coalition of 40 states, the largest privacy-related multi-state settlement in US history.

CDC reports a new strain of omicron taking over in the US
The CDC projected that about 40% of confirmed US COVID cases are caused by the XBB.1.5 strain, up from 20% a week ago. It’s not clear yet where this version of omicron came from, but it appears to be spreading quickly here. Thankfully, there’s no indication XBB.1.5 causes more severe illness than any other omicron virus.
