Very recently, wolverines in the U.S. were in trouble. Even though fewer than 300 wolverines remain in the lower 48 states, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service chose to deny protections to the animals under the Endangered Species Act. This was a harrowing blow that struck fear in the conservation community. Thankfully, a federal judge just invalidated the agency's ill-conceived decision, which means the courts have bought wolverines some more time. But one court decision alone won't be enough to actually save these rapidly-disappearing creatures. We need thorough government protections for wolverines. That includes listing them as endangered or protected!   This not the first time a court has rejected a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service move to deny protections for wolverines. Despite this fact, federal agencies still have not put any protections in place to save wolverines' populations from further decline. Wolverines' habitats have shrunk dramatically in the past century due to human development and climate change. Additionally, poaching has snuffed out many wolverines and made fewer and fewer places livable for the beloved mammal. After two courts have rejected the ridiculous Trump-era decision to deny protections to wolverines, the message should be clear to regulators. Tell the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service it must listen to the courts.
