A bombshell investigation is shaking the Southern Baptist community in the U.S. New reporting reveals that, for more than a decade, officials within the church kept a secret list of pastors and employees who were known sexual predators. Yet instead of siding with the victims of these crimes, church officials chose to prioritize protecting the perpetrators — even conducting multiple coverups. A horrific 205-page church database tracked more than 700 cases against hundreds of abusers... and those are just the cases we know about. How many times did church leaders and employees brutally abuse unsuspecting congregants, while the church stood by and did nothing?
The people victimized include women, children, and people of all genders. They were traumatized first, when the assaults occurred. And again, when church leadership failed them by hushing up the problem and continuing to support the perpetrators. For anyone to do that to children and other victims is untenable — but it's especially sickening when a whole organization refuses to care. As so many survivors know, we cannot rely on abusive institutions to hold themselves accountable. It simply does not work, and leaves the door open for future abuses to occur. Survivors deserve answers, justice, and peace of mind that this will not happen again in the future. We demand the U.S. Department of Justice conduct an independent, external investigation.
