We celebrate Mother’s Day to honor the ones who kept us healthy and safe when we were too young to care for ourselves.
Human beings are born helpless. We need someone to feed us, bathe us, play with us, and teach us basic life skills. These needs are not so different in the animal world. Sadly, on a factory farm, a mother pig is denied every single one of her natural instincts of mothering, and her piglets are ripped away from her at the first opportunity. Right now, around the world, there are more than 80 million Mother pigs who suffer daily in tiny metal cages with no room to comfortably move or turn around. Not only is Mother pig confined to a small area on barren concrete flooring, the air filled with noxious ammonia from her collected waste, her babies will be forcibly removed from her just days after their birth and will undergo painful mutilations like teeth grinding and tail clipping all without any pain relief while Mother pig watches, unable to comfort their squeals of anguish.
World Animal Protection knows there is a better way. Which is why we are working hard to end the suffering of farmed animals by transforming the global food system. But the current cruel reality remains for millions. A day prior to birthing her piglets, Mother pig’s natural instinct will kick in, and she will feel the need to begin nesting. Her cramped, stressful living quarters will prevent her from doing this and cause a great amount of pain and frustration for her. These emotions combined with her already heightened hormonal state can, and do, cause severe complications during the painful birthing process. |
