Bittersweet

 

Happy Mother’s day! Today is bittersweet for me. Today is bitter because my mother, Kathy, who I loved as dearly as any son can love their mother, died a week ago today. I have vivid memories of celebrating Mother’s day as a child in my mom’s prison visiting room, making cards, building arts and crafts, and celebrating as best we could with vending machine food. My mother lived a full life so there is much to celebrate even as we mourn. She fought cancer long enough to welcome my father, her partner, home from prison after 40 years apart. And she fought long enough to be the first person to welcome my son home from the hospital when he was born. Here is a moving obituary published in the New Yorker. Today is sweet because I love my wife as dearly as any person can love their spouse and today is the first mother’s day where I can celebrate her as mother to our 8 month old son.
