The Democratic establishment was reeling after AOC defeated the 4th most powerful Democrat in the House. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) was scrambling so much to stop progressives that it created a Blacklist.
What was the DCCC blacklist? It started in early 2019 and it blacklisted any vendors, staffers, and organizations that supported primary challengers to Democratic incumbents — officially putting the interests of a handful of corporate-backed, conservative Democrats above the will of Democratic voters.
Why did the DCCC do it? House leadership was afraid more Justice Democrats like AOC and Ayanna Pressley would defeat long-time incumbents. They were afraid of the Squad growing. They were afraid of a stronger challenge to the corporate-backed establishment in Congress.
The DCCC was trying to block working-class progressives from a slew of critical campaign resources. But Justice Democrats were ready to meet the challenge of this anti-democratic policy.
Two of our recruits, Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman, still defeated long-time corporate incumbents in 2020 while the DCCC Blacklist was in effect. We were not afraid of the Democratic establishment and we continue to win races despite the odds stacked against us.
In order to continue winning races against the deep-pocketed corporate-backed Democratic establishment, we need the help of our grassroots supporters. Can you chip in $10 to help us run strong campaigns and elect more Justice Democrats?
The DCCC announced an end to the blacklist after the 2020 elections — it was more of a PR nightmare for them than an effective tool against progressive primaries.
But we’re not surprised House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to support conservative anti-abortion Democrat Henry Cuellar against Justice Democrat Jessica Cisneros. Pelosi said, “I support my incumbents. I support every one of them.”
Justice Democrats started because we can’t just elect Democrats, we have to elect BETTER Democrats — progressive fighters like AOC, Ayanna, Cori, Jamaal and others who support Medicare for All and a Green New Deal.
Pelosi’s choice in TX-28, Cuellar, voted against abortion rights, labor rights, AND worked to block Build Back Better, all in the last year. Those are huge parts of the Democratic agenda. But Pelosi is still backing Cuellar.
While we fight for economic, social, racial, and environmental justice, corporate Democrats like Cuellar and many others will try to protect corporate profits and the status quo.
We don’t take a cent from corporate PACs. Meanwhile, corporate Democrats take money from Wall Street, Big Oil, Big Pharma, payday loan companies, and union-busters. It’s clear: Justice Democrats will fight for the people, the Democratic establishment will work for their corporate donors.
Thank you for all that you do to support our work and our primary candidates.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
