224 species discovered in Greater Mekong

This month, we are excited to reveal species recently found in the Mekong, a crucial way you can help big cats, and stories of people at the forefront of science. Thank you for being part of our conservation wins.     Mysteries in the Mekong   More than 200 species were discovered in the Greater Mekong region in 2020. WWF is calling for increased protection for these rare species and their shrinking habitats. Do you know what they are?   Take a guess ►   Species spotlight: Greater blue-ringed octopus   This small octopus is found in shallow coral and rock pools around the coast of Australia and farther north in the tropic western Pacific Ocean. After ambushing its prey—primarily crabs, mollusks, shrimp, and fish—it injects venom to paralyze or kill it. Species Hapalochlaena lunulata Size When it hatches, this octopus is about the size of a grape seed. As an adult, with its arms spread out, it is no wider than three inches. Interesting info Despite the animal's size, its venom is extremely powerful—it's lethal to people.
