Illinois is first state to eliminate cash bail

Fantastic news -- Illinois became the first state to eliminate cash bail!   This is a HUGE win in our fight to dismantle systemic racism. For too long, poor communities of color have been disproportionately affected by high bail costs for low-level offenses while the rich walk free.   We see instances anywhere we look -- upper-class Brock Turner was allowed to post bail for a sexual assault, while similarly aged but less privileged Kalief Browder was put into solitary confinement for TWO years based on the suspicion he stole a backpack.   Our country is just one step closer towards stopping the exploitation of the justice system to target disadvantaged communities.
