More than an "ironic upside," those images were a message: that situations presented as inevitable have always been choices, that it is action—and inaction—that have kept those skies gray. Covid-19 may be hastening things, but the oil industry was already on the ropes. And while we welcome the demise of an industry that does such harm, we have to remember that a creature can do tremendous damage in its death throes, and that a better way forward isn't guaranteed, unless we fight for it.
