Friend, the question I attempt to answer in each of my films is deceptively simple: who are we as Americans? This election next month affords us the same chance, to define what our country stands for by changing who controls our Congress. To that end, I’m asking you to support a candidate near and dear to my heart. Maggie Goodlander is my own congresswoman, and if we don’t defend her seat, there is no path to taking back the House. Maggie restated a principle as old as the republic itself, that our servicemembers answer to lawful orders — and lawful orders only. The President responded viciously. He encouraged the Justice Department to indict her. A grand jury of ordinary citizens refused. That’s the decision — the decision to defend our Constitution at all costs — which we want from our elected leaders. Not everyone makes it, but Maggie has over and over. She has chosen to put her country before herself. Now, I hope enough of us will do the same and help make sure Maggie has the resources to win this pivotal race. Friends, the Declaration of Independence closes with a promise: “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” That's a big thing to give up. Putting your country before yourself is real patriotism and requires making a conscious decision — a decision to devote ourselves to serving our neighbors and bettering our future. But my congresswoman in New Hampshire, Maggie Goodlander, has made that very decision time after time.
