A Hurricane Hit Florida 18 Days Ago. Trump Still Hasn't Signed For Help.
A hurricane hit Florida's Panhandle. Families still can't apply to FEMA because Trump hasn't signed off. Their congressman's answer: "No, no not yet." Gay Valimont is running to replace him.
A week after Hurricane Isaias hit Florida, families stood in a long line for tarps. A county commissioner said close to 100 people were waiting for a roof.
“These kids have not even had a warm shower,” he said.
On October 15th, Florida asked Trump for a major disaster declaration. That signature is what lets families apply to FEMA for help with their homes. More than 41,000 Florida homeowners have filed insurance claims.
Trump has not signed it.
One county spelled it out for its residents. The only federal help so far “covers government response costs only.” Nothing for families.
He Said The Money Would Come From His Office
Trump has said he wants to phase FEMA out. “We’re going to give out less money,” he said. He said disaster aid would come “from the president’s office.”
Now Florida’s families are waiting on the president.
Only the president can sign it. Trump could do it today.
Their Congressman’s Answer: “No, No Not Yet”
Jimmy Patronis is a Trump-endorsed congressman. Most of the storm’s insurance claims came from his district. These families are his voters.
A reporter asked him if Trump had approved the aid. “No, no not yet,” Patronis said.
A week earlier, he praised Florida’s request. He called it “an important step toward getting families and businesses the help they need.” That step is still waiting on Trump.
Every State Gets Hit Eventually
Hurricanes, floods, and wildfires hit every corner of this country. This time Trump is making Florida wait. Next time it could be any town in America.
A Volunteer Is Coming For His Seat
Gay Valimont is running to replace Patronis. She started as a volunteer. She rose to lead a statewide group, and it grew more than 400 percent under her.
Six of every ten dollars Valimont has raised came in gifts under $200. Almost none comes from political groups: under $5,000 of nearly $300,000.

One Week To Election Day
Election Day is November 3rd, one week from today.
A $25 gift this week still pays for Valimont’s ads and door knockers. Every one of them has to reach voters in the next seven days.
The families in that tarp line vote in this race. Patronis told them “not yet.” Valimont has seven days to reach them.
