A group of anti-ICE activists in Texas is facing a combined 556 years in prison on phony domestic terrorism charges following a protest outside the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas. Several of the defendants did little more than wear all black to a protest. One person who didn't even go to the protest got 30 years just for moving a box of leftist literature.1 These were the very first prison sentences handed out under NSPM-7, Donald Trump's presidential order directing the Justice Department to prosecute left-wing activists as domestic terrorists. Now Trump is demanding that Congress ram through a major increase in funding for NSPM-7 enforcement during the post-election lame duck session of Congress, before Democrats take over in January.2 We're fighting back to stop him. Will you make a donation to support our campaign to stop NSPM-7 and push for other key reforms? Under NSPM-7, anyone who espouses a sweeping range of vaguely defined political views — including "anti-capitalism," "anti-Christianity," and "anti-Americanism" — is considered a likely domestic terrorist and a priority for investigation.3 Prairieland was the NSPM-7 test case that showed that the Trump Justice Department, with the help of Trump-appointed judges, can target left-wing activists with bogus terrorism charges and secure lengthy prison sentences. With one successful prosecution in the books, the Trump regime is expanding their NSPM-7 dragnet. In Minnesota, 15 anti-ICE protesters could also face lengthy prison terms after being indicted for their organizing during Operation Metro Surge last winter.4 Similar charges have been brought against demonstrators in Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, and elsewhere.5 We're mobilizing grassroots pressure to demand that Congress end NSPM-7. With Trump pushing for a huge increase in NSPM-7 funding, we need your help to fight back. Will you make a donation to support our campaign to stop NSPM-7 and push for other key reforms? Thanks for taking action, Joey and the team at Demand Progress Action |
