Medicaid is under attack and we have an opportunity to fight back.

The Trump Administration has published a final rule that will strip health coverage from millions of working families through their punitive Medicaid “work requirements” and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is accepting public comments until July 31, 2026.

If you’re brave enough to speak out, submit your public comment now.

The Trump Administration is lying about the realities of the program and we cannot allow them to codify those lies into law without creating a public record of the truth.

The big lie about implementing what they are calling ‘work requirements’ hides the fact that right now the majority of Medicaid recipients are already working for poverty wages and earning less than $15,650 a year.

The reason Trump and his allies lied about gutting Medicaid and making it harder for people to see their doctors was to pay for the tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires that they passed last year.

Under this lie-fueled new rule, thousands of working-class and disabled people will be forced to navigate under-funded, complicated state bureaucracy on a regular basis to prove that they are still living in poverty.

We need to expand access to healthcare, not put more complicated barriers in between people and their doctors.

Use your voice and submit a public comment to push back against this cruel effort.

Here's what the data shows:

  • 64% of Medicaid adults are already working. Another 29% aren't working because they're caring for family members, dealing with illness or disability, or attending school. Only 8% fall outside these categories.

  • Up to 7 million people could lose Medicaid coverage by 2028 due to this requirement. Even with strong protections, at least 3 million would still lose coverage.

  • Work requirements don't increase employment. When Arkansas implemented similar rules, 18,000 adults (1 in 4 subject to the requirement) lost coverage in just 7 months, with no increase in employment.

  • Most Medicaid workers can't access employer insurance. Nearly half (46%) work for small companies with fewer than 25 employees, which aren't required to offer health coverage. Many work in agriculture and service industries where only 46% are eligible for job-based insurance.

  • The administrative burden will hurt everyone. States report they lack adequate time, federal guidance, and system capacity to implement this properly. This means even eligible people, including children, seniors, and disabled people, will lose coverage due to paperwork errors and processing delays.

  • The Administration's own rule admits this will cause harm. Last-minute changes to the medical frailty exemption will reduce the number of people who qualify for protections, leaving more vulnerable individuals at risk of losing coverage despite serious health conditions.

We cannot let this change go into effect without fighting back. Even if we lose this round, the more people we have on the record in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services public comments, the more it will strengthen our ability to undo these cuts once the Trump Administration is overthrown.

Make your voice heard and be on the right side of history before the public comment period closes at the end of the month.

Thank you,

Michael Phelan
