Do you remember this guy? NPR just published a new interview with Pete Hegseth’s personal spiritual leader — the extremely fringe, right-wing pastor Doug Wilson. And this headline has all the alarm bells ringing:  Mainstream. That’s the word religion and history scholars are using to describe how Wilson’s teachings have moved from the fringes of our society to the mainstream, now that Donald Trump’s administration is filled with Christian nationalists. In case you need a refresher on who this guy is: He’s made disturbing and shameful claims defending slavery and saying it wasn’t that bad. He thinks we should criminalize homosexuality. He said God created women “to make the sandwiches” and that wives should submit to their husbands. And he believes the 19th Amendment should be repealed — because granting women the right to vote was a “bad idea.” To be extremely clear: My role in society isn’t to submit to a man. It’s to be a Member of Congress. And a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa. And a member of the House Armed Services Committee. And to serve as the Parliamentarian in the House Democratic Caucus, making me one of the youngest members of Democratic House leadership.  Get the picture, pastor? But in case there was any doubt about Wilson’s vision for our country, he’s made it clear in the NPR interview that his full focus is on banning abortion nationwide, overturning marriage equality, and gradually turning the United States into a Christian theocracy — where religion controls our government and politics, in direct violation of our Constitution. Under his vision, non-Christians wouldn’t be able to hold public office.  This is despicable.  We can’t be shocked anymore by this administration, but we can stay outraged — and channel that anger into getting these racist, sexist, homophobic, egotistical losers out of power so they stop infecting our country with their rot and putting us on the fast-track to white nationalism and authoritarianism. That’s my mission, and I know we can do it if we roll up our sleeves and get to work. I’m all in on this — my team and I are laser-focused on retaking a Democratic House majority, working to support Democratic challengers and incumbents, and of course winning my own re-election.
