Protect Massachusetts residents from dangerous sand mining Send Your Letter A dangerous sand mining operation has been desecrating the environment and harming Massachusetts residents with emissions of dust and noise for years. Now, the company wants to expand. Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rebecca Tepper is accepting public comments on the plan – but only until June 22. Our best chance to stop this expansion is to flood Secretary Tepper with public comments urging full environmental review and maximum measures to mitigate current impacts and avoid and minimize future harms. Please make sure to send your letter by June 22. This mine is in the Towns of Carver and Plympton. Send Your Letter In 2018, the sand mining company SLT Construction and its sister company obtained a MEPA environmental review certificate promising 33 acres of "open space" as mitigation for the sand mine and development. Now, almost the entire site has been stripped. Where is the open space? The sand mining has already leveled Carver's highest hill and expanded into Plympton. It has been spewing sand pollution into Rickets Pond and nearby homes according to residents’ photos and testimonials. According to federal regulators, the mining creates Respirable Crystalline Silica dust that causes irreversible lung disease. The mine is within 5 miles of four Environmental Justice Neighborhoods. On May 22, 2026, Superior Court Judge Pasquale issued an injunction requested by the Town of Plympton to stop the mining and restore the Plympton land. Under the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) the project requires a "notice of project change" and a review to determine whether the plans "avoid, mitigate and minimize" damage to the environment.
