GEO Group just sued Colorado to block a state law requiring quarterly health inspections of their Aurora detention facility.    The law exists because GEO refused to let inspectors interview staff during a gastrointestinal illness outbreak earlier this year.    Before that a detainee reported being served spoiled milk.    Another said the food arrived soggy and moldy.    The air conditioning broke, then was turned up too high.    GEO's legal argument is that requiring them to meet basic health standards constitutes an unfair burden on the company.

TRACK TRUMP'S DETENTION CRUELTY

Let’s break this down: GEO Group is a publicly traded company making hundreds of millions of dollars on federal detention contracts. When states try to verify that people inside their facilities are not being served rotten food, GEO hires lawyers and sues.  They have federal political cover and they use it.  We have had GEO in our sights since we first documented their forced labor schemes and tracked their no-bid contract expansions. When GEO blocks state inspectors, and the DHS inspector general sits defunded and the audits are paused, the documented paper trail we preserve is what remains.  A company this well resourced is counting on wearing down everyone who comes after them.  They have the lawyers and the patience for a long fight. So do we, and the people inside those brutal facilities are counting on us.
