Donald Trump’s choice for Surgeon General, Casey Means, is wholly unqualified and potentially dangerous. The Surgeon General of the United States is a leading spokesperson on public health and a leader of over 6,000 civil servants dedicated to improving public health in America. We deserve better than a misinformed, self-serving nominee who could worsen Trump’s attacks on our health and wellness. Means just had a hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee — where one of your senators sits — and it’s possible we can defeat her confirmation. Tell your senator: Reject Casey Means, Trump’s nominee for Surgeon General, and stand up for health and sound science! During the hearing, Sen. Chris Murphy used Public Citizen research in his questioning. Here are some of the highlights from our report on Casey Means: Means has an inactive medical license and dropped out before completing her surgical residency Means is a wellness influencer who has expressed misinformed thinking on public health issues — for example, she has challenged the safety of the childhood vaccine schedule and called birth control pills a “disrespect of life” She has a history of promoting products on social media and her newsletter without disclosing financial ties she has to them, and has made hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting supplements and other products (often unproven or underregulated) The Surgeon General needs to be a trusted voice in public health who only uses the best available science — not someone who spreads misinformed claims and seeks to benefit themselves. Your senators should reject Casey Means and protect the American public from unscientific health advice from this dangerously unqualified nominee.
