Virginia Redistricting Amendment 2026: How New Maps Could Shift the House Balance

The Virginia Supreme Court cleared the path for the special election, allowing voters to decide whether the General Assembly can bypass the 2020 bipartisan commission to restore “fairness” following Republican gerrymandering in other states.

Virginia Democrats are aiming to draw eight safely Democratic congressional districts and two Democratic-leaning ones in the state, where the House delegation currently comprises six Democrats and five Republicans. The new map would leave Republicans with just one safe seat. — NY Times

Center For Common Ground is encouraging Virginians to vote on the referendum. Early voting begins on March 6 for the April 21 election. Check this StoryMap for details by district.

Virginia redistricting 2026 Congressional Redistricting

Democratic state legislators have proposed a constitutional amendment that would allow the Virginia General Assembly to redraw congressional districts outside of the normal 10-year redistricting process. This is part of a national Democratic response to Republican-led redistricting efforts in other states, kicked off by President Trump’s encouragement to draw maps that are more favorable for the GOP before midterm elections this November. — VPAP

The Supreme Court of Virginia has cleared the way for voters to decide on new congressional maps in an April 21st referendum. This is not a backroom decision. This is not a legislative maneuver. This is the people’s call.  View the new 10–1 Congressional map here.

Governor Abigail Spanberger said it plainly: “Now it’s up to voters.” House Speaker Don Scott was even clearer, “When the stakes are this high, we cannot sit back.” And here’s the truth: we have less than 10 weeks. If we do not organize, educate, and mobilize — misinformation will fill the vacuum.

Fair maps don’t defend themselves. Voters do. Center For Common Ground is mobilizing voters for the election. If you believe representation should be earned — not engineered — now is the time to step forward. Support their efforts for:
