Minnesota Fights Back

What happened in Minneapolis cannot stand

While the Trump regime tries to exhaust us with their rampant abuses of power, I’m proud to be one of your daily outlets for truth and action. We’re cutting through their propaganda and taking them on every single day, just like we have for a decade.

Thank you for taking part in building up our movement. Your presence here alone is an act of resistance. Thank you for showing up, staying informed, and doing what you can to make a difference.

Let’s jump in.

ALEX JEFFREY PRETTI

Alex Jeffrey Pretti was killed yesterday by Trump’s federal agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The story pushed out by the regime about the incident was pure propaganda—contradicted immediately by multiple eyewitness videos.

Here’s what we know: Pretti was legally armed with a handgun, but recordings of the encounter show he never pulled it out or had it in his hands. He was a 37-year-old ICU nurse with no criminal record, and he sure as hell should still be alive today.

A vigil was held for Alex Pretti last night, and his parents, Michael and Susan Pretti, later issued a powerful statement. Calling the Trump regime’s claims about their son “reprehensible and disgusting,” they said: “Alex is clearly not holding a gun … Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man.”

WORKING WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT

The photo above shows me with President Barack Obama on inauguration night in 2009. Back then, when I ran political events, I worked closely with federal agents, Capitol Police, and state and local law enforcement. I’ve seen real threats up close, and I’ve personally removed unruly people from events.

What I saw yesterday was the exact opposite of the training I’ve been exposed to—it was reckless chaos. If the agents involved had even a fraction of the restraint and discipline I’ve seen from the professionals I’ve worked with, Alex Pretti would still be here.

PROTESTS ERUPT IN MINNESOTA AGAIN

Following the killing of Alex Pretti, emergency protests erupted across Minnesota. People were rightfully furious, as crowds filled the streets chanting “Whose streets? Our streets!” and “F**k ICE, ICE out!” The message was loud and clear—telling Trump to get his goons out of our cities.

MINNESOTA TELLS ICE TO LEAVE

Yesterday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey immediately spoke out against the killing of Alex Pretti.

Walz called on Trump to “end this operation,” saying his agents “killed a man, created chaos, pushed down protesters, threw gas indiscriminately, and then left the scene. And then we’re left to clean up.” He added: “Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”

TRUMP'S DELUSIONS & LIES:

Responding to the Trump regime’s propaganda about Alex Pretti, Walz said: “Thank God we have video.” Calling their narrative “nonsense” and “lies,” he declared: “There will be justice for Minnesotans.”

And Frey urged people to recognize that your children and grandchildren will one day ask: “What did you do to protect your city? What did you do to protect your nation?”

In the coming days, we must channel our outrage into action. Contact your Senators and Reps and demand accountability. Show up at protests, community gatherings, and use your voice online. They’re counting on us to back down and move on—but we never, ever, will.

Our Midterm Accountability Project reaches millions of people via our digital organizing, our Contact Congress campaigns are flooding the Senate and House, and our daily news briefs demolish maga propaganda.

We win by taking action, sustaining our pressure, and refusing to let them control the narrative. But our rapid-response work requires resources. So if you’re ready to support our fight, please upgrade to a paid subscription today:

How should we respond to Republicans who are blaming Democrats for ICE’s violence?

What is a win you’ve had this week, personal or otherwise?

A FEW COMMENTS AMONG MANY:

Yesterday, I unexpectedly saw a reporting by the Bulwark (an unfamiliar organization to me- knew name only) on YouTube about the killing of Alex Pretti. I was distraught and in tears for Mr. Pretti and our country. I did write to both my AZ Democrratic senators, and Democratic representative urging no more funding for Homeland Security until significant reforms are made, and with the possibility (and hope) of Kristi Noem's impeachment. This week my postcards to Republican senators: "You must choose between American democracy or an administration that is destroying it. You can do this." Those lines were from a Heather Cox Richardson YouTube video post. Other Dworkin supporters are welcomed to use those lines, if you also wish to write!

What has me concerned is that I thought something important would happen on gun control after Sandy Hook, and it did not.

My win yesterday? By mid-afternoon, I needed to get away from the news. I gathered up my 4 bags of donations to White Dove (a thrift shop run by Hospice Valley of the Sun), and then stopped by a coffee shop on the way home (something I rarely do.) My heart softened while I smiled and people-watched.
