New York Fashion Week just made history — and we should all celebrate it. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has announced that, starting in 2026, no fur will be allowed at any official NYFW events. That means no fur on the runway, no fur in promotional materials, and no fur featured on NYFW’s platforms. This is a huge victory for animals, for compassion, and for everyone who has been fighting to push cruel fur out of fashion.

Under this ban, fur from animals farmed or trapped for their coats — mink, foxes, rabbits, chinchillas, coyotes, and raccoon dogs — is no longer allowed. The rule makes a single exception for animal fur obtained by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence hunting practices.
For decades, animals like foxes, mink, chinchillas, and raccoon dogs suffered enormously so the fashion industry could sell luxury myths about fur. On fur farms, animals spend their entire lives trapped in tiny wire cages, denied everything natural to them. Many go mad from confinement. They’re often killed by electrocution, gassing, or neck-breaking — methods chosen because they protect the pelt, not because they spare animals pain.
Even “wild-caught” fur is no better. Leg-hold traps and snares leave animals suffering for hours or even days before they die — sometimes from blood loss, exposure, or predators. There is no version of the fur trade that isn’t built on cruelty.
That’s why NYFW’s decision matters so much. Fashion isn’t just about clothing — it shapes culture. And when one of the world’s most influential fashion events says that cruelty has no place on the runway, people pay attention. This move will accelerate the shift toward humane, innovative, and sustainable materials that don’t harm animals.
Now is the moment to show NYFW that the public overwhelmingly supports this compassionate stand.
