In 2017, the prior Trump Administration brought down the Muslim and African Bans suddenly, causing chaos, separating families, and denigrating entire communities on the basis of their race and religion. Muslim Advocates and our partners fought back through Emami vs. Nielsen, a 2018 class action lawsuit on behalf of thousands who were wrongfully denied visa waivers under President Trump’s Muslim Ban. This time around, our communities are facing a tide of interlocking policies, practices, and pronouncements from the Administration, including the termination of Temporary Protected Status for people hailing from Muslim-majority and predominantly Black countries, all aimed at the same thing: excluding and targeting our communities on the basis of our identities. And like last time, Muslim Advocates remains in the fight against state discrimination against noncitizens. We proudly represent a group of Syrian nationals against the Administration's planned termination of TPS for Syria, a move that threatens the deportation of over 6,000 people to lives of uncertainty and danger in a conflict-torn region.
On November 19th, a federal judge in Manhattan ruled in favor of our clients, temporarily postponing the Trump Administration's initiative. To hear this ruling read from the bench was thrilling for our clients, our co-counsel, and the Muslim Advocates team.
We're proud to stand against such open bigotry. We're heartened that a judge recognized the force of our arguments. We thank all of you for the role you play in making our work possible. Given all we are facing now, and all that lies ahead, including the government's appeal of the ruling temporarily preserving Syrian TPS, we hope you will consider a gift to Muslim Advocates.
